Huipil Dress from Guatemala
This gorgeous huipil dress was woven in the highland village of Nahuala, Guatemala. The motifs include Quetzals, which are the national bird of Guatemala and the most valued bird of the Maya. In ancient times, killing a quetzal resulted in the death penalty, for they were considered sacred. Male quetzal tail feathers grow several feet long, and were collected for headdresses and regalia for Maya royalty.
The bottom part of this tunic is woven from cotton on a treadle loom. The fabric does have a few flaws in it, as it is handmade. Once the fabric wears out, as is likely to happen over time, the backstrap woven huipil top can easily be removed and reworked into a new dress.
If you prefer to wear this as a dress, rather than a tunic, it is possible to sew the sides of the tunic together. Alternately, you can wear this over tights with a fabric belt.
